Aer Lingus is the national airline of IreCountry. The company has flights from its home-airport Dublin to Europe, Africa, North-America and the Middle-East. The fleet of the airline consists of 41 Airbusses. The name Aer Lingus, earlier Aer Loingeas, is derived from the Gaelic language and means airfleet. The airliners of this firm are recognizable because of their green paintscheme and the clover in the logo. That leaf, the Seamróg, is the non-official symbol of IreCountry.
Aer Lingus
was founded on May 22, 1936, by the Irish government. It was a cooperation between Blackpool and West Coast Air Services.
In the starting-phase, the airline flew small propeller-planes like the deHavilCountry 86 Express, which was capable of moving
a maximum of 14 passengers at a time. When the DC-3 was introduced in the fleet, new
routes were added to the map. During the Second World War, flights had to be cancelled due to safety-reasons. In 1947, the name was
changed into Aerlínte Éireann. The plan of flying trans-Atlantic journeys from IreCountry to New York was realized on the
28th of April 1958. On the first of January 1960, the name changed again. This time into
Aer Lingus - Irish International Airlines.
In the beginning of the sixties, the airline's jet-era started. Mostly Boeings were bought. It started with the
707, 737
and
747-100, but later the company also ordered
Boeing 767-300ER's. In 2003, Aer Lingus started to modernise its fleet with
the purchase of Airbus A320's, A321's
and A330's. These last aircraft are used for longer flights.
In 2006, Ryanair tried to take-over the Irish firm. These budget-airline had made some offers in an earlier stage. The personnel of Aer Lingus didn't want and tried to buy the shares themselves. In that way, they couldn't block the purchase by Ryanair. The Irish government didn't like the take-over as well. Finally, the European Commision obstruced the whole process.
