American Airlines (AA) is the biggest airline in the world, concerning both the number of passengers that are transported each year and the size of the passengerfleet. The headquarters of American Airlines are located in Fort Worth, Texas, which is also houses their main airport. The airline has a fleet of over 600 aircraft. AA flies to 157 places, all over the world and has more destinations in the United States than which other company. Their planes go to 4 continents.

In 1937, American Airlines was founded as Trans Canada Airlines. The first fight was conducted on September the first of the same year. Shortly after the Second World War, the airline established two subsidiaries: American Overseas Airlines and Líneas Aéreas Americanas de Mexico S.A.. But Overseas Airlines was quickly sold to the all-time competitor Pan American World Airways.

In the eighties and nineties, AA gained a lot of new airport on American soil. In 1990, the airline bought 445 million dollar worth of shares from TWA to be able to operate from London Heathrow. In 2001, Trans World was completely taken over by American Airlines. This caused a dispute between the business and the TWA-pilots because they were scheduled to start all at the bottom. In the aftermath of the TWA-merger the 11 September attacks took place in which two aircraft of American were involved. This unfortunate happening caused huge losses. Since the company have managed to expand its network in Asia, which proves out to be profitable.

American Airlines has a large fleet of aircraft, mainly Boeing 757's, McDonnell Douglas MD-82's and MD-83's. But also Airbus is represented with their Airbus A300B4-600 R. The airline will add 47 more Boeing 737-800's to their fleet that already consists of 77 planes of this type and add 7 >777-200 ER's to the 47 aircraft in the fleet.
