British MidCountry Limited (BMI) is a British airline with sevaral main airport, London Heathrow and
Manchester. The headquarters are in Castele Donnington, England. Together with
British Airways and
EasyJet it's one of the mayor airlines of the UK.
There
are 51 destinations on the map, which are in Europe, North-America, the Caribbean, the Middle-East, Africa and Central-Asia.
As subsidiary, the company has bmiBaby. This air-carrier takes care of most cheap flights. BMI has joined
airline organization Star Alliance.
British Midland is originated from Derby Aviation Limited, which is derived from Air Schools Limited in 1949. That company was established in 1938 and trained RAF-pilots. In 1965, international flights to the European mainland started. A new name, Derby Airways, was chosen in 1959. In the end of the sixties, the route-book was expanded with a lot of regional destinations. With a next name-change in 1964 British Midland Airways, abbreviated to British Midland in 1985, became known. In 2000, the airline joined Star Alliance, an international airline organization.
British Airways didn't look forward to negotiations with
Virgin Atlantic about a merger at all. To obstruct it, the
British airline thought of buying BMI or Virgin Atlantic.
Eventually,
all talks have been abandoned.
British MidCountry flies with different types or aircraft, most of them being manufactured by Airbus, like the A319 / A320 / A321 and A330 and some smaller Embraers.
