The fleet contains 234 aircraft. British Airways has always been a large customer of Boeing. Traditionally, the airline always flew with planes from Britain. In the end of the nineties, the first Airbus was purchased. British Airways is one of the just two users of the supersonic airliner Concorde. But the company has is a sophisticated airline now as well: it has ordered 12 Airbus A380's and has options for 7 more.

British Airways originated from a number of mergers. In 1924, the four pioneering airlines Instone Air Line, Handley Page Transport, Daimler British Airways and Air Marine Navigation were united to form Imperial Airways. The stress was on flights to Australia and Africa. Besides, smaller airline were active. Regional flights are conducted with a small AirbusThey merged in British Airways Ltd.. The company was nationalized in 1939 as British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), called Better On A Camel to joke as well. In that same year British Caledonian, one of the leading British airlines, was taken-over by British Airways. That made it one of the biggest airfirms in Europe.

Since 1974 the British flag has been painted on the tails of all British Airways aircraft. In 1997, the airline chose to a completely different painting. It was related to the countries the company flew to. Delfts pottery, Chinese calligraphy and so on gave the planes a such unique look that it was hard for the air traffic controllers to recognize them. The fleet was repainted in 1999, where the British flag returned. It was in the same style as the Concorde introduced earlier.

British Airways is well known, all over the world. The company has had multiple awards for their service and a couple for best Economy Class and Business Class. In 2006, Skytrax gave British Airways the title Airline of the Year.
