Delta Air Lines is an American airline. It has its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Concerning the number of transporter passengers in a year, Delta is the second largest flight-operator in the world, behind American Airlines. With 324 scheduled flights, the company serves more destinations than any other. Aircraft go to North-America, South-America, Europe and Asia. Delta Air Lines is a member of Skyteam, an international airline alliance.
The
company was established in 1928 in Monroe. A little later, it moved to Atlanta. From there, the network of routes was broadened
with cities as Chicago, New Orleans, Cincinnati and Ohio. In the fifties, the first flights to the Caribbean and Venezuela
were carried out. Currently, the airline has the most Atlantic connections. A lot of them are gained after
Pan Am went bankrupt.
Delta Air Lines used to be a big customer of Douglas, leading
to a large fleet of DC-8's in the sixties. Later, the
nog
DC-9 was added too. In 1970, a couple of
Boeing 747's were purchased. These aircraft proved out to be too big for the company.
Because of that, the were replace in an early stage of use with the L-1011 Tristar
and the DC-10. The years that followed the airline was very profitable.
In 1979, it managed to move one million people in a month, just from one airport. In the eighties, Delta bought a large number
of Boeing 767's. These aircraft are the pillar of the fleet.
Delta Air Lines is now busy expanding its fleet. To do so, the airline has made 58 orders for the
Boeing 737-800, 10 for the Boeing 737-700,
13
for the Boeing 757-200 and 5 more for the
Boeing 777-200 LR Worldliner.
After the attacks on September 11, the economic department of Delta Air Lines faced a true blizzard. Causes of this were the high oil prices and the Americans being afraid to fly. That fear was a result of the attacks on the WTC. In 2004, a massive reorganization was conducted. A lot of jobs were lost. It was also necessary to increase the number of flights to gain as much money as possible. There have been multiple offers to take over the company, but within Delta, there's a lot of resistance.
