Royal Jordanian Airlines is the royal airline of Jordan. Main hub is Queen Alia International Airport. The firm has joined the international airline-alliance Oneworld. In a week, Royal Jordanian makes about 350 flights, moving 45.000 people. The airline is now busy renewing and expanding its fleet. There have been placed 19 orders and 12 options for new aircraft. In 2005, the fleet was only 17 planes big.

One of the... ... two new aircraft that Royal Jordanian has bought

Jordanian Airlines was founded on the 9th of December, 1963, by king Hussein. It was called Alia Jordanian Airlines, after his oldest daughter from his first marriage. Royal Jordanian was established with the financial help op shareholders. These were later bought out, in order that the airline became full government-property. On December 15, 1963, the first flights have been accomplished.

When the airline was in the starting-phase, it only hade two Heralds and a Douglas DC-7. After a while, the fleet became bigger so that more destinations could be visited. The first flight to Europe occurred in 1965. These aircraft are A Lockheed L-1011 TriStar owned by Aliadestroyed by an Israëlian attack. They have been replaced by Fokker F27's. These Dutch planes have been sold in favour of Boeing 707's. The Boeing 720, Boeing 727 and Boeing 747 were added in a later stage. But the airline had planes from other manufacturers too, for instance from Lockheed. Alia operated the L-1011 TriStar for a while.

In 1986, Alia Jordanian Airlines changed its name into Royal Jordanian Airlines. On the 10th of February 1996, it established Royal Wings. This airline takes care of the regional flights. In April of 2007, Jordanian Airlines joined Oneworld, an airline-organization. That made them the first Arabian aircraft operator to link itself to a worldwide alliance of airlines. Royal Jordanian is still the only Arabier in the group.
