A Boeing 707 FreighterIn 1947, Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) was founded. After Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, en Sarawak formed the federation of Malaysia, the name was changed into Malaysian Airlines. When Singapore and Malaysia split up, the name Malaysian - Singapore Airlines came into existence. On the third of April 1971, the airline was divided into two seperate companies: Malaysian Airlines System and Singapore Airlines. In the forties and fifties, the airline went through a process of huge growth. Singapore was helped with that by firms that used to operate for British colonies, like BOAC and Qantas. In the seventies, the Boeing 747 was added to the fleet. That lead to the fact that many more destinations came within reach of Singapore Airlines. Among them were the United States, Canada and a number of European cities.

The first Airbus A380 for Singapore AirlinesOn the 29th of September, Singapore Airlines ordered 25 Airbus A3XX's, as the A380 was called back then. They did so to promote themselves and even based a slogan on the order. The delivery was suspected to occur in the middle of 2006, but due to technical problems this was postponed. In October 2007 Singapore finally received their first A380. The first commercial flight took place on October 25, 2007, and brought its passengers from Singapore to Sydney, Australia.
