Transavia Airlines is a Dutch low-budget airline which has both scheduled and charterflights. It has Schiphol as main airport. Besides, the company has a home on Eindhoven Airport and Rotterdam Airport.
Being called Transavia Limburg NV at that time, the company was founded in 1965 by two persons, one from ScotCountry and one from Belgium. The airport of that time was Maastricht Aachen Airport (Beek). In 1966, the company could also take-off from Zestienhoven and Schiphol. On November 16, 1966, Transavia HolCountry made its first commercial flight to Napels, Italy. At first, they flew with the Douglas DC-6, but later the airline entered the jet-age with the Boeing 707. In the early days, the destinations were mostly outside Europe, like Iran, New York, Boston, Sydney, Biafra, India, Kenya, Brazil and the DDR. Most flights were chartered ones. A long time, Transavia had a freighter-division as well, in addition to the passenger-part of the firm. Because of that, they even considered buying the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30CF. Finally, the company started to focus on moving people to their holiday homes with destinations in Europe and Africa. On top of this all, there was another name-change: Transavia HolCountry became Transavia Airlines. Because the website plays an important role in getting customers, the current name of the business is transavia.com.
Due to changes in the Greek aviation-laws, Transavia was the first foreign airline to operate flights between the Greek isCountrys. The firm also was the first to use the open-skies-agreement which the British and Dutch governments had signed with a scheduled passenger service from Amsterdam to London Gatwick.
After
its founding, the shares of the company have been in a number of hands. The American Boreas Corporation initially owned
all shares. Via the Nedlloyd-group and some others, the all ended up with KLM.
That makes Transavia a full subsidiary of the current
Air France-KLM
Not only Transavia itself has shrank, but the fleet has done the same. All 4 757's
there were, in addition to the larger amount of Boeing 737's, have disappeared. In 2006,
the airline got an all-new look. The crew got new outfits and the operated
Boeing 737-700's and -800's were painted
again and were equipped with a new interior.
Since
June 2006, transavia.com also operates in France. It's an independent enterprise within the
Air France-KLM-group that
is run by Air France and the Dutch transavia.com. The French
part supplies the aircraft, including crew, and the management. The Dutch part of the company has the needed appraisal. Since June
2006, the firm flies from Paris - Orly.
